Giving Thanks to Mother Earth: Honouring Gratitude Through Action

As we celebrate Thanksgiving here in Canada, it's a beautiful opportunity to reflect not only on what we have received from Mother Earth, but also on what we can give back.
For countless generations, Indigenous Peoples have practised traditions of gratitude, reciprocity, and respect for the natural world. While traditions differ among Nations, many teachings remind us that the Earth is not simply a resource to be used, but a living relationship to be honoured.
Here in Eastern Ontario, we are surrounded by the beauty of changing leaves, fertile farmland, flowing rivers, and forests preparing for their winter rest. Autumn reminds us of the natural cycles of giving, receiving, releasing, and renewal.
Simple Ways to Give Back to Mother Earth This Thanksgiving
Offer gratitude to the land. Step outside, place your feet upon the Earth, and take a moment to acknowledge the land, water, plants, and animals that sustain us.
Give something back. Pick up litter along a favourite walking trail, plant a native species when conditions are suitable, or support a local environmental initiative.
Honour the natural cycle. Leave some fallen leaves in your garden to provide shelter for beneficial insects and other small creatures throughout the winter.
Respect the harvest. Reduce food waste, compost what you can, and support local farmers who help nourish our communities.
Create a personal gratitude ritual. Light a candle, reflect on the gifts of the past year, and make a personal commitment to care for the Earth in the seasons ahead.
Gratitude Is More Than a Feeling
True gratitude is not simply saying thank you. It is demonstrated through our actions, our choices, and the respect we show for the world around us.
This Thanksgiving, as we celebrate the abundance in our lives, may we also remember that our relationship with Mother Earth is one of reciprocity.
We receive so much from the Earth. May we never forget our responsibility to give something back.
Happy Thanksgiving, and may your day be filled with gratitude, connection, and reverence for the beautiful Earth we call home.
