Returning to the Divine Mother: Nurturing Ourselves in a Changing World

There are moments in life when the world feels loud, fast, and uncertain.
And in those moments… something deep within us begins to whisper.
Slow down.
Come back.
Be held.
This is the call of the Divine Mother.
What is the Divine Mother?
The Divine Mother is not limited to one religion, one story, or one form.
She is the energy of creation itself. The force that nurtures life, holds transformation, and remains present through both birth and grief, joy and uncertainty.
She is found in the softness of compassion…In the steadiness of the earth beneath your feet…In the quiet strength that allows you to keep going, even when life feels heavy.
Across time, she has been known by many names.
In Christianity, she is reflected in Mother Mary, often associated with unconditional love and compassion. In Hindu traditions, she appears as Durga and Kali—both fierce and protective, reminding us that nurturing also includes strength and boundaries. In ancient Egypt, she is Isis, the great mother of magic and healing.
As Julian of Norwich once wrote:
“As truly as God is our Father, so truly is God our Mother.”
The Divine Mother is not something outside of you.
She lives within you.
Mothering Ourselves

For many, Mother’s Day can bring up a mix of emotions.
Love.
Gratitude.
Grief.
Longing.
Sometimes all at once.
And what this time of year gently reminds us is this:
There comes a point in our healing journey where we are asked to become the ones who nurture ourselves.
To offer ourselves:
Rest, without guilt
Boundaries, without explanation
Compassion, instead of criticism
To sit with our emotions instead of pushing them away. To listen to our bodies instead of overriding them. To choose softness in a world that often demands hardness.
As Thich Nhat Hanh beautifully said:
“You carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside of you.”
This is what it means to embody the Divine Mother.
Nurturing in Times of Change
We are living in a time of deep transformation—both personally and collectively.
And when everything feels like it’s shifting, the nervous system often goes into overdrive.
We try to keep up.
Push through.
Stay strong.
But the Divine Mother teaches us a different way.
She reminds us that healing does not happen through force.
It happens through:
Safety
Presence
Gentle awareness
In the words of Rumi:
“Try to learn to let what is simply be.”
Nurturing yourself is not a luxury.
It is a necessity.
Honouring Transitions
May also brings moments of transition. Endings and beginnings often walk hand in hand.
At Pure Lotus, we are honouring one of these transitions as Maureen Sullivan offers her final reflexology sessions before moving into a new chapter.
Transitions invite us to pause…
To reflect…
To appreciate what has been… and to gently open to what is next.
This, too, is part of the Divine Mother’s wisdom.
She teaches us how to hold both gratitude and change at the same time.
A Gentle Invitation
This month, you are invited to come back to yourself.
To reconnect with your body.
To soften your breath.
To listen inward.
Whether through stillness, healing work, or shared space in community…There are many ways to begin.
As Lao Tzu reminds us:
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”
You do not have to do it all. You do not have to rush.
Just begin with one small act of care.
One moment of presence. One breath.
Closing Reflection
If you place your hand over your heart for a moment…
And simply ask:
What do I need right now?
Can you allow the answer to come… without judgment?
That is where she lives.
The Divine Mother is not something you have to find.
She is something you remember.
Journal Prompts: Connecting with the Divine Mother Within
What does “being nurtured” truly feel like to me? When have I experienced this before—and how can I begin offering that same feeling to myself now?
In what areas of my life am I being asked to soften instead of push? What might change if I responded with compassion instead of pressure?
What does my inner child need from me in this season? How can I show up as a safe, loving presence for that part of myself?
Where am I being called to create stronger boundaries as an act of self-love?What would it look like to honour my energy without guilt?
If the Divine Mother within me could speak right now, what would she say?
Can I allow her voice to come through without judgment or overthinking?
Take a few quiet moments, place your hand over your heart, and allow yourself to write without rushing. There is no right way to receive these answers.
